The Weekly Recap
Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap! This recap will be of all posts up until the 17th of July:)
To start us off is Daniel Benak’s report of 4 trips in the Pelagos Sanctuary, a cetacean hotspot off the Italian coast, where he got some exciting species like Cuvier’s Beaked Whale, Risso’s Dolphins, Fin Whale and more!
Next up is Flemming Versloot’s trip to Sumatra, with 37 mammal species (32 lifers!) including the likes of Binturong, Orangutan, Smooth-coated Otter and Prevost Squirrel.
And the third and final trip report was Grayson Ponti’s from Australia! With an excellent cover picture involving a massive wombat, he saw 20 species such as Platypus, Eastern Barred Bandicoot and Spectacled Flying Fox.
The Global Birdfair happened a few weeks ago in the UK, and once again the mammalwatchers managed to infiltrate! I’ve heard rumours they arrived inside a large wooden Okapi…
The day you’ve all been waiting for has come: a special mammal listing app is here and in need of Beta testers! Developed by Chris D. over the spring, you’ll be able to log your sightings, post questions and reports, and see your position in global rankings so you’ll know not only who your nemeses are but where to hunt them down. If my father happens to be one of these nemeses you can forget about the app, as I will happily provide his home address for a small fee. Or perhaps even for free.
The 43rd volume of the Gnusletter, written by the IUCN Antelope Specialist Group, is out! I must admit I have not read it (I have a large pile of birdwatching books to get through first) but apparently it has a good article by Ken Coe about searching for Dibatag in Somali.
Quite a few people have been asking for mammalwatching tips recently. Evan is wondering about Malayan Tapir (specifically the current situation in Taman Negara). He also has a question about KL Eco Park (Bukit Nanas) because most of the information from there is over 10 years old.
Asanoth is planning a trip to Ghana next winter and is wondering whether early March or January would be a better time to go — he wants to find mammals but also herps.
Rebecca Harrison is planning an Iberian Lynx trip to Sierra de Andújar in October and has a few questions about timings, guides and photography.
This post by Tina Greenawalt is about Spectacled Bears in Papallacta, Ecuador – is it possible without a guide or 4×4? She’d also love some general mammalwatching tips for the Mindo area.
For anyone who has taken a Svalbard wildlife cruise, Miles Foster has some questions about the best times of year for Polar Bears, cetaceans and general visibility/weather etc. He’d also love some tour company recommendations, so leave a comment if you have any answers.
And finally, Nathan Dias has shared some cute videos of a Southern Bog Lemming digging around in his garden in North Carolina. Despite it being such a tiny animal, the video gives a very good view!
