Wild Vietnam: Rare Primates & Mammals 2-Week Expedition — NEXT CONTINENT 2026 Trip Report
This March, Next Continent led our annual Wild Vietnam: Rare Primates & Mammals 2-Week Expedition, resulting in our most successful tour to date.
It was a very rewarding trip, marked not only by the number of species recorded, but also by the quality and consistency of wildlife encounters throughout the expedition.
Over the course of the tour, we observed 65 mammal species, with more than 90% successfully photographed by participants. Highlights included 13 primate species, 19 bat species observed in the field (with a further 26 species identified through acoustic recordings), and approximately six civet and other carnivore species.
During two weeks in the field, we travelled more than 2,000 kilometres from southern to northern Vietnam, working across an extraordinary diversity of habitats and elevations. These ranged from lowland wetlands and limestone karst landscapes to montane evergreen forests and extensive cave systems. In total, we explored nearly 20 habitat types across 10 national parks, nature reserves, and conservation areas.
Notable mammal encounters included Southern White-cheeked Gibbon, Northern Pygmy Slow Loris, all 3x Douc Langurs, Delacour’s Langur, Annamese Langur, Annamite Muntjac, Large Indian Civet, Greater Hog Badger, Hairy-footed Flying Squirrel, Ratanaworabhan’s Fruit Bat, Thick-thumbed Myotis, Stoliczka’s Trident Bat, and many more.
In addition to our mammal observations, we also recorded 267 bird species, 25 reptiles, 17 amphibians, and more than 150 species of butterflies, moths, and other insects.
