Alligator River National Refuge in North Carolina
As of Aug 1, 2026: Main road has been closed due to close interaction of black bears and people. I’ve gone there numerous times a year for the past 6 years. The past 2 years, people have been driving double the speed limit thru the refuge. Tour busses full of kids and even dogs have been ruining wildlife viewing. It was only a matter of time. People often run in nature! What a shame. Check on Fish and Wildlife website for updates. The main road closed is Miltail Rd. It leads to areas where the bears would graze, swim and the cubs played. Watch for Miltail Rd to reopen, hopefully by next year. Easier solution, stop the tour buses. Or offer limited memberships and viewing times.
