2025 South Africa Roadtrip: Two Months & 130 Mammal Species

Hello!

This is my first trip report for the site. I am a guide with Tropical Birding and was assisting on this year’s South Africa EWT: https://www.tropicalbirding.com/africasouthenigmatictour

The tour was a major success, and part of a new series of non-bid focused tours we are now running. Depending on the tour the focus varies from mammals, herps and other biota. The first section of my trip was with this tour, but the second portion was completely solo. I’ve attached the pdf of the trip report below.

During the trip I managed to see 103 new mammal species, 130 in total. Some of the biggest highlights included all the South African canids & primates, Zorilla, 4 of the 7 felids, 9 of the 11 Mongoose, both Rhinos, Aardvark, Aardwolf, Large-eared Mouse, Honey Badger, my first Golden Mole and Molerats, Bushpig Southern Giant Pouched Rat, 14 bat species (all seen) and 3 of the 4 Viverrids (civets & genets).

Hope you enjoy,
