Best possibilitiy for Snow Leopard sighting in Ladakh in octobre (and other mammals in Northern India)

Dear Mammalwatchers

My wife and I have the chance to go to Northern India in autumn of 2025. First we will visit Ladakh and go for a longer trek to Zanskar. Our route goes from Leh to Lamayuru to Kanji. From there we hike for ten days in very remote countrysides to Padum. We know that in this region the Himalayan Bear is around. Is there also a chance to spot the Snow Leopard? We have some days around Leh before we start. Is there a good place to visit for spotting Snow Leopards? We will also pass through the Ulley valley where is a known hot spot in winter. I found a lot of information but all is about the winter months. I also know that it is much more difficult to spot Snow Leopards in octobre because the prey is still in very high altitudes.

Further we will go to the Spiti-Valley. I was there allready in 2020 and I will revisit my guide Tanzin Dorje. Here is my trip report from then.

New Trip Report: Snow Leopards in Chicham, Himachal Pradesh (India) – Mammal Watching

There we take our chance to hike around with Tanzin. He sent me several pictures from the Snow Leopard from the summer months. Maybe we are lucky.

After this we go to Rajasthan to visit Mount Abu, Jawai Bera Leopard Camp and the Jim Corbett National Park. As birders we also go to the Keoladeo National Park near Bharatpur. We desided not to go to the Ranthanbore National Park because it seems over touristic. Any thougts or ideas for this regions?

Any help ist very much appriciated.

Best regards, Simon

In recent times Snow Leopards have been spotted well in summers and in fall too. Instead of Leh – you can stay in Uley Tokpo – the same elevation – and once acclimatized, you can explore the surrounds. From here you can explore Uley, Yangthang and other valleys where snow leopards may be spotted.
In Rajasthan – are you going to Mt. Abu to look for birds or any specific mammal? Jawai is a nice area and you will possibly find leopards and some other mammals there along with some good birds. In the upper hills above Jim Corbett – birding is very good too. And if you like bird hide photography there quite a few in Sattal and some other areas not too far from Jim Corbett.

@Vana, Thanks a lot for your comments and isea’s. We will certainly go to Ulley and take our chances. In Mount Abu we will go for two trekkings. Right now we have not planned anything special with mammals and birds there. We are looking forward to see hopefully some new species. Thanks again!
