Colombia 2026 for Oncilla

I made a quick trip to Colombia in January 2026 to try and see the Oncilla that coming into a lodge south of Jardin. I was also birding, so not primarily mammal watching, but it was a successful trip on both fronts.

Thanks Tina for the report. And great you got that porcupine too!

    Thanks Tina, that’s very helpful!!

Nice report & photos – one correction, though: the porcupine should be a Stump-tailed Porcupine (Coendou rufescens), rather than the Forest Hairy Dwarf Porcupine (C. pruinosus). C. pruinosus should be smaller-bodied, lacks reddish spines, and is only found in the eastern Andes.

Excellent little report, and I’m happy that the cat continues to come!

Do you know if it came at all on the day you didn’t see it in the morning? Like, did it show up when you were out?

Also, another small correction: (Venkat correct me if I’m wrong, but) there’s a little confusion with back agoutis around the Western Andes, like iNaturalist lists dozens of sightings from Montezuma, Jardin, etc. but in fact that species doesn’t occur within hundreds of miles from there. These are all central American agoutis and not black agouti.
If I understand correctly, and according to IUCN distribution maps.

Yes, you are right about the agoutis – I missed that. In Jardin, Montezuma etc. (even as far E as Chicaque) it’s 100% Central American Agouti. Black Agouti should only show up in the lowlands of the Llanos and western Amazon.

Well I got the oncilla right! Thanks for the correction! It did not show up during the day as far as I know. I was around that area most of the time because that’s where the birds were and I was birding. It seemed like no one knows where it goes during the rest of the day, but I was told it almost always shows up early in the morning and then leaves for the rest of the day, or days at a time. The feeders are right outside the house and there was almost always someone there so I think they would see it if it came back.
