Far North Queensland – July 2024

Here is a trip report from a mammal watching plus scuba diving holiday to Far North Queensland. We saw some great mammals and had a fantastic time. Highlights were Northern Quoll, snorkelling with Minke Whales, the Common Spotted Cuscus, Tree Kangaroos, 3 species of Rock Wallaby, an assortment of bandicoots, possums and gliders and an incredibly obliging platypus.

Jane I shared this on the Aus mammal facebook group for comments on the bats primarily. You can see the thread here if you are a member of the group but in a nutshell ” you have I. peninsulae not macrourus from Davies Ck, and your purported house mouse from that site definitely isn’t. It could be a juv rock rat … and … All the bats at Tolga are correctly identified, the others are tricky to get comprehensive ID without measuring, the speculative Miniopterus looks correct to genus. The bat speculated as Scoteanax looks like it might be Myotis macropus by the big foot in the photo.
The other Vespertilionid bats (Scotorepens/Vespadelus) can’t really say beyond those possible genera, without measuring and checking teeth. .. and Jon Hallthe gliders are also kreffts not sugar

Back to me ,,, I think the bentwing ID is good but I’d be surprised if you saw Scoteanax on Magnetic Island. This is quite an uncommon bat and I thought mainly a tree cavity rooster. The broadnosed bats in the pics look like scotorepens to me, I guess it should be S. sanborni there (probably).
