Malaysia and Thailand trip report, April-May 2026.

Report of a recent three-week trip to Malaysia and Thailand with 61 identifiable species recorded. This area is well-covered on mammal-watching.com, but hopefully people will find the updates on various sites helpful. Highlights included Sunda Pangolin, Large-spotted Civet, Eld’s Deer and a nice selection of primates, rodents and bats.

As a young child in Kolkata (Calcutta), I apparently insisted my mom take me to the zoo every day, whereafter I would come home and draw stick animals to be arranged in scrap books by continent of origin. I kept those scrap books for years. Mammal-watching.com provides a different way of organizing my sightings, but otherwise not much has changed.

    Great photos Ian. I am not convinced about the marmoset rat – it’s a difficult angle I know but see this pic from Jirayu https://www.facebook.com/share/p/196bAuZTpQ/. Also the berylmys looks a bit small and spiny to me for that species unless those leaves are massive (but I don’t have my books with me).
