RFI: Porcupines & other mammals in Liguria

We will be visiting the Italian Alps and Liguria next month for some mammalwatching, herping & birding.  We are mainly going to Liguria for herping (cave salamanders) and a bit of whale watching (Cuvier’s beaked whale, hopefully) but will definitely be spending a few nights looking for crested porcupines.

Any advice on how/where to find crested porcupines would be much appreciated. Information is a bit scant as most people (understandably) seem to be visiting Abruzzo & Rome.

Other tips for both the Italian alps and Liguria are much appreciated as well!

All the best,

Aaron

Last year I made some, admittedly rather half-hearted attempts in the hills south of Bologna, with no luck (only quite a few Fat Dormice). From what I could gather, the porcupines are everywhere but the populations are not very dense, so it’s not easy to just bump into them.

Thanks Jan, that is helpful. We will just give it a go and see what happens. Hopefully we run into some fat dormice as well!
