Southern Ecuador – worth exploring?
Hello all!
My spouse and I have been planning a trip to Belize in November but the flight prices have been staying stubbornly high. I can’t pull the trigger on $900 when I know it could drop to $500 anytime, so I’m weighing other options. Coming from USA btw. Thank you to Ian Thompson for all of the terrific advice on Belize, if we don’t go this time I’m eager to go in the near future.
I see I can get to Guayaquil very cheaply with a one stop flight, around $400, but Quito is double that (nonstop). If I get to Guayaquil, it’s a $150-200 domestic flight to Quito, still $400 cheaper than Quito for two tickets. Not sure I want to do 3 flights each way for this length of trip.
Plan is:
About 9-10 days excluding travel time.
Less than $700 per flight feels like the sweet spot for this trip
I’ve been looking through many of the incredible Trip Reports from Ecuador, and pretty much all of them start in Quito. It’s just much cheaper to get to Guayquil. Is there anything exciting to see in the southern part of the country, where flying to Quito would not be necessary?
We’d like to go off the beaten path and see many animals, ideally some mammals but just as interested in birds and reptiles and amphibians.
If anyone has any ideas or tips I greatly appreciate it!
