The Red Goral: What it is and where to find it?

The Red Goral is one of the least documented ungulates on the planet. I have seen it years ago in India and have ever since collected every piece of information I could find and put it together in my “Caprinae world” – http://www.wilddocu.de/category/allgemein/caprinae-world/. Inspired by Jon’s 2026-Yunnan-report I updated my Red Goral chapter – http://www.wilddocu.de/red-goral-nemorhaedus-baileyi/ – which is now three times as extensive as the English wikipedia entry. Of course for all mammal watchers I included the different possibilities how to get a glimpse of it.

Interesting article Ralf – thanks. I was talking about this species with my friends in China and they told me there is a place in Tibet where they should be easy to find and we started discussing organizing a group trip to Tibet. But it seems the area for the goral (and Himalayan and Black Musk deer too) is closed to foreigners as it is on the border with India. If we can get permission to visit I will let you know!

Yes Jon, in Motuo, Xizang, China, the red goral is pretty easy to see. The matter is that for foreigns it is very difficult to get permissions to this area.

Hello Zhou Fangyi! Thank you for your reply. However I cannot find “Mutuo” on google maps. Is there another name or could you provide coordinates?

Thank you, Jon. Yes, let me know. Highly appreciated.

Thank you, Zhou! Well yes, that could be a problem to get that far south. But it should be also possible to see them along the Yarlung Tsangpo River near Nyingchi.
