The Weekly Recap

Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap!

Our first order of business this week is my dad’s latest stint as an “influencer”, which he is very proud of. You can get 10% off the new Thermal Master DV2 heat scope (or any other Thermal Master gear) with the code “mammalwatch1”, so it is only $449 until December 1 – check out the post for more details and my dad’s review of his new gadget: “In short I am very impressed, And so was my buddy Todd who was with me in Florida and is ordering one for himself.”. Or else you could spend your money on something useful, like therapy for your daughter. Trust me, she needs it. Especially if she has a mammalwatcher for a parent.

Anyway… The first trip report of the week was Bastien Chaix’s Snow Leopard trip to Kyrgyzstan back in 2022. Like all Snow Leopard trips it looked like a real adventure and the report has some stunning photos.

Next is this Borneo report from Ian Green at Greentours. With great species like Sun Bear, Sunda Pangolin, Bornean Orangutan and Sunda Clouded Leopard, the trip was a great success!

Royle Safaris have shared the report of their March trip to Sichuan, where they saw Giant Panda, Asiatic Black Bear, Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, Chinese Mountain Cat and 37 other species.

My dad’s report from a weekend in Florida where he missed all 3 of his target species: Eastern Spotted Skunk, Florida Mouse, and Southeast Pocket Gopher, as “the little pest kept itself hidden” (he actually used a far ruder word he doesn’t want me to repeat here). However the report still has some useful information and he saw a few other species like Golden Mouse, Black Bear and Armadillo.

The last trip report is Cheryl Atonucci’s from Brazil, with some adorable monkeys and a very funny Amazon Manatee picture. Some species highlights are Ecuadorian Squirrel Monkey, Pink Amazon River Dolphin, Red-rumped Agouti and Southern Pygmy Marmoset.

The 2026 Mammal Bingo card is here! With squares ranging from Bovids to Mustelids, it looks like a lot of fun to join in on. I think we should create a Mammalwatcher Bingo next, with things like “terrorist accusations at airport security because of suspicious gear” and “forgot baby on roof of car because of rare squirrel species” (yes, my dad did this at least once).

This post gives some general updates on things like the Mammalwatching Podcast (returning soon!), updates to the Global Mammal Checklist and the NUTTER Awards early next year – so be sure to get your nutty – I mean NUTTER – trip reports out in the rush before January.

Daniel Wilcox, travelling to Kenya this week, is asking for some good Maned Rat spots. And Mohamed Rehaan would like some recommendations for a couple nights in Oman, specifically Arabian Wolf, Ratel and Genet without a thermal scope.

Finally, check out this blog post about the Giant Black Fossa, shared on the website by Chad Johnson.
