The Weekly Recap

Hello, welcome back to the weekly recap!

First, some exciting news: the NUTTER awards are now open for voting until the 22nd of February! I have just completed mine and enjoyed the feeling of power it gave me. 😉

This week, as usual, saw a few great trip reports. The first of these was Yirui Heng’s report from Labahe and Gouli, China. The goal of the trip was to find a Red Panda, and this was a great success with not just one but four individuals seen! Some other species highlights include a Mainland Leopard Cat, seemingly endless Pallas’ Cats, a Snow Leopard and a whole family of Eurasian Lynxes.

Next is Flemming Versloot’s post about a Beluga Whale that has been repeatedly spotted very close to a beach on the West coast of the Netherlands. So if anyone wants to see a Beluga, here’s your chance!

This report of Anna Bauerová’s trip to Spain includes Iberian Lynx, Eurasian Otters and even Barbary Macaques in Gibraltar (I had no idea until now that you could see Macaques so close to Spain!).

Sophie Baumgartner’s report from Abruzzo, Italy includes Red Deer, Wild Boars, a European Hare, and proof that as a mammalwatcher you can value your children for something other than free bear bait. A concept which is foreign to some…

Next is a short trip to Tangjiahe NR, China by Zhou Yudong. It features species like Siberian Flying Squirrel, Reeve’s Muntjac, Serow and a Mainland Leopard Cat.

Eduardo Ruiz, who will be looking for mammals in Uganda in October with Harriet from HarrierTours, is wondering if 2-3 others would like to join him. The trip will include Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale NP and Gorilla trekking in Buhoma, with other potential species including African Golden Cat, East African Potto and White-bellied Pangolin.

The newest episode of the Mammalwatching Podcast just came out! Charles and my dad tell each other about their two recent mammal trips: Tanzania (Charles) and Patagonia (Jon). I haven’t had a chance to listen yet but I am looking forward to it:)

A mammalwatcher travelling to Finland in May is looking for contacts to help them find Flying Squirrels in the Lieksa/Kuhmo area, so leave a comment if you have any ideas.

Finally, check out this most recent version of the all primate checklist from the IUCN – if you want to enter your primate total in the mammalwatching league tables then this is a good list to use.
