The Weekly Recap

Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap! I’m sorry they’ve been consistently late recently, I’m going through the classic university exam hell at the moment – although I’d say I’m through the worst of it (or may just be beginning to experience some lack of sleep induced apathy…)

Anyway, the first trip report from this past week was Mark Hows’ long-awaited trip to Australia (Cairns to Sydney). He saw many animals of all sorts, but some notable mammal sightings (from the total 55) are the Fawn-footed Melomys, Platypus and Australian Humpback Dolphins!

He wasn’t the only person to mammalwatch in Australia recently: Jane Kempler’s report from Northern Queensland is worth reading just for the adorable photos: a happily surprised looking Red-legged Pademelon, a quite frankly ridiculous Common Spotted Cuscus, a dismayed Australian Green Frog, a stern Australian Boobook and a Dwarf Minke Whale they snorkelled with, just to name a few.

Jane also posted a report from Norway: she got to swim with Orcas AND see the Northern Lights, so I think it’s safe to say I’m pretty jealous!

Alex Sowers’ 2 day trip to Washington got him some cool species like Northern Pocket Gopher, White-tailed Jack Rabbit and Ord’s Kangaroo Rat.

My dad’s report from a few days looking for moles and voles (such fun…) in Bulgaria was a success with Martino’s Mole and Harting’s Vole, which sound like Mario Kart characters.

You may remember Charles Foley’s story about a fascinating interaction between a puma and tapir he witnessed in Bolivia. The finished article about it has been published here, so definitely check it out!

Sam Patel is wondering if anyone would like to join him in looking for Polar Bears and seals in Alaska at the end of the month. Check out this post if you’re interested, and for general trip ideas check out the join a trip page

David Walsh, planning a trip to South-East Asia, would love some recommendations on good parks and guides in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.

The latest – and I’m sure eagerly-awaited – episode of the Mammalwatching Podcast is here! An interview with Shavez Cheema, the founder of 1StopBorneoWidlife tour company, who talks about the potential for ecotourism in Borneo and some of his favourite mammal encounters. Shamefully I haven’t actually listened to this one yet, but I’m sure it’s great (and no, there is not currently a thermal-scope equipped gun to my head).

Speaking of thermal scopes, take a look at this review of the Pulsar Axion 2 XG35 if you want to see a picture of the world’s most “famous” (not the first adjective I would think of, personally) mammalwatcher’s strong body heat (something I can unfortunately confirm from having been too near him when trying to sleep in some tropical country).

Finally, check out this post for some cool pictures of a Muskrat in New Jersey building its nest!
