Trip Report – Vancouver Island Tour – Royle Safaris – July/August 2023

A short report / mostly sightings log of a family holiday taken last summer to British Columbia. Focused nearly entirely on Vancouver Island. 24 species with highlights being Dall’s porpoise, Vancouver Island marmot, American black bear (the 7th species of bear for Martin….just Polar bear now for the set – I decided to get the harder species first :)) and Grey whale (which had eluded Martin up to this point also).

We also had a very rare extralimital sightings of a horned puffin out of Tofino, not a mammal, but a very cool bird and only the 3rd one ever that our guide of 40 years had seen there!

You may be interested to know that on top of your endemic marmot siting 3 of the mammals you reported from Vancouver Island represent recognized endemic subspecies; American Black Bear, American Red Squirrel and Common Raccoon
