Pygmy Hippo

Pictus Safaris are delighted to once again be visiting Tai National Park in Côte d’Ivoire in late March/early April 2023. We have run several successful trips to this fantastic forest in 2022, with particularly notable mammal sightings including Jentink’s duiker, zebra duiker, Liberian mongoose, Johnston’s genet and, of course, pygmy hippo.

Our thanks go to Ben Schweinhart for providing the photos used in this advert – Ben is an independent traveller whom we assisted with logistics when visiting Tai in 2022, and he enjoyed a superb, protracted sighting with a pygmy hippo under spotlight. Since then, there have been numerous sightings of pygmy hippo in the forest, both by day and by night, including of a mother with a calf.
For birders, Ben also had the privilege of making only the second ever photographic record of Shelley’s eagle owl, and other trips have recorded white-breasted guineafowl, rufous fishing owl, yellow-headed picathartes, white-crested tiger heron, African finfoot, chocolate-backed kingfisher and much more.

Game-viewing takes place on foot around our exclusive camp deep in the forest, as well as by boat and kayak along the Hana River. Basic safari tents or chalets are used for accommodation throughout the tour, although we also have the rare privilege of being able to camp out deep in the forest interior if desired.
The tour is currently priced at £4,000 with no single supplement – all enquiries are welcome at contact@pictus-safaris.com – three spaces remain on the tour.
