The Weekly Recap
Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap!
The first trip report of the week was from this Royle Safaris tour of Zambia in search of some particular views of elephants feeding at a lodge. They ended up seeing 40 mammal species including Miombo Genets, Noack’s African Dormouse, Bushy-tailed Mongoose and many Leopards!
Next is Klil Zaitlin’s trip to Svalbard and northern Norway. There are some beautiful photos and great species, like White-beaked Dolphins, Ringed Seal, Minke and Pilot Whales and a gorgeous Arctic Fox.
Yon’s report from his trip to Thailand at the end of last year saw Gibbons, Melanistic Leopard, Sun Bears named Dragonfruit and Pumpkin, and some cool photos (including an Asian Monitor Lizard eating a turtle and Yon doing some prime primate imitation)!
Last but not least is Carlos Bocos’ great trip report from Papua New Guinea: Silky Cuscus, Doria’s Tree Kangaroo and Long-fingered Triok to name a few highlights.
Don’t forget that in January 2027 there is the mega Naturetrek mammalwatching expedition to Antarctica! Even I am excited for this, and that’s saying something. Check out this page if you’re interested in joining.
Ben Balmford successfully saw Musk Ox in Norway thanks to an Oppdal Safari tour, so he shares all the details in this post.
Iwan Roberts, travelling to British Columbia next month, would like some recommendations for good guides and spots. His priority species are Orca, Grizzly and Black Bear, Wolf, Lynx, Puma and Sea Otter. Nathan Myhrvold, hopefully going to Wood Buffalo NP this summer, is wondering whether driving through would be a good way to see mammals, and if anyone has recommendations for other parks in Alberta/NWT.
Steve Babbs is heading to Tanzania’s eastern arc in August of 2026 for some bird and mammal watching and would also like any tips you might have.
If you know about any current road closures in Alligator River NWR, please comment here.
Finally, 1StopBorneo’s new massive nature guide is now also available on their website!

Thanks for reading:)
