The Weekly Recap

Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap! You may be disappointed to hear that I (Katy, the superior Hall) am back. My father hasn’t managed to replace me yet, although I have also been trying very hard to help him do so since I was born.

This recap will be mainly trip reports, so get ready…

The first trip report of this week is of my dad’s weekend in China. After driving around in a bus decorated with Finless Porpoises, he saw Pere David’s Deer, the recently discovered Eastern Forest Hedgehog, a Hog Badger, and Shantung White-toothed Shrew among 9 other species!

Next is a report from Klil Zaitlin, who completed the first Big Mammal Day in Israel. With 20 species it was very successful and included an Arabian Wolf, African Wildcat, Egyptian Fruit Bat and a Jungle Cat to mark #20!

Carlos Bocos has shared a trip report from West Papua (Papua Occidental) written in Spanish,

This report from a Royle Safaris trip to Argentina and Chile (the Southern Cone) features a Long-nosed Shrew Opossum, Franciscana and Monito del Monte (all three of their target species) and 30 others. They will be going back in 2027 and hope to see 50 species then, so keep your eyes peeled for that trip…

Greg Easton posted a report from his recent trip to Iceland and Finland. Although mainly a tourist cruise, he still managed to get some great species in like several Wolverines (of which he took great pictures), Minke Whale, White-beaked Dolphins and Saimaa Ringed Seal.

Moses Swanson has shared his farewell to Zimbabwe report, as he has just moved to Minnesota. During his years there he saw 27 lifers – this report is a compilation of various trips over the past 9 months, and includes an Eastern Rock Elephant Shrew, Mutable Sun Squirrels and even his first Leopard in 9 years!

Wildlife Watching Expeditions took a trip to Nepal in May of last year to find tigers and leopards – they ended up seeing 5 cat species including Bengal Tiger, Leopard and Jungle Cat. They also saw many other cool species, so definitely check out the report!

This trip to Colorado got Bennett Gardner 18 species in 6 days, including the adorable American Pika, Long-tailed Weasel, Wyoming Ground Squirrel and Pronghorn.

Tau Conrad has shared a short post about various Arctic Fox spots in Iceland here

This report from Vienna by Mike Hoit features the iconic Black-bellied Hamsters in Meidling cemetery, but he also saw European Souslik, Soprano Pipistrelle, Western Roe Deer and a few more.

Next is Dave Griswold’s report from the southern Pantanal, Brazil includes an incredible Giant Anteater (a dream come true for him!), Capybaras, Six-banded Armadillos and more!

Finally, my dad shared a report from North Queensland, a trip I only narrowly managed to escape. I’m even more glad I escaped after seeing this report, which consists mainly of bat-filled culverts. He saw Queensland Horseshoe Bats, Krefft’s Glider, Queensland Tube-nosed Fruit Bat and a few more species. However, I couldn’t stay away forever: I joined an evening walking around the Cairns Botanic Gardens, during which another innocent soul (my best friend) was lost to the satanic pull of mammalwatching. We saw several Striped Possums, Spectacled Flying Foxes and some Bandicoots.

Jackson Frost is heading to Papua New Guinea and Indonesia this month and is looking for people to join him – it might be too late by now, but why not check out the post just in case.

1StopBorneoWildlife have posted about camera trapping in Sabah – what gear to use and how to use it, as well as the species they’ve seen. It’s very informative and includes some adorable pictures of Sun Bears, Clouded Leopards, and some very curious-looking Pig-tailed Macaques, so definitely check it out if only for that.

Bruno Kovacs Gomez, planning a trip to Hungary, is asking for recommendations for where to see Golden Jackals, Beavers, or any other Hungarian wildlife.

A new paper has been published about Ginkgo-toothed Beaked Whales which you can read here: with new details of their behaviour, location, and even acoustic signature which will make finding them a little easier, it looks very interesting!

Finally, Asanoth has a question about the phone app for the Xinfrared T2 pro, as it keeps freezing, so please comment on this post if you’ve had the same issue and know how to fix it.
