The Weekly Recap
Hello and welcome to this week’s recap!
Today’s first trip report was John Van Niel’s from an Oceanside cruise around Spitsbergen, Svalbard. He got 11 species, including Walrus, Hooded Seal and Polar Bear, of which there is a great photo of one asking for a tummy rub.
John also posted this one from Paraguay with Wild Chaco Expeditions: 31 mammals and 190 birds, with great species like Maned Wolf, Azara’s Night Monkey and Geoffrey’s Cat, as well as some very cute armadillo photos.
“Asanoth” has shared a report from a fun 2023 trip to Queensland, Australia, during which nearly all the species were lifers! It includes Humpbacks, Platypus, and Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo.
NextContinentTours is back with the sequel to last week’s Bach Ma NP report – their second tour there this month. I must add that it was a honeymoon tour, a very… strategic way to test a marriage’s strength. They got some great species though, so as long as they both saw them all I’m sure the relationship is still intact: Pygmy Slow Loris, Annamite Muntjac and Asian Brush-tailed Porcupine are some highlights.
Venkat Sankar shared a report from a trip to central Washington with Nicole Haseley and Alex Sowers, where they managed to get 25 species in only 2 nights! Some of these are Townsend’s and Washington Ground Squirrels, Long-tailed Weasel and Coulee Chipmunk.
Venkat also posted this report with 21 species from Florida, including Florida Manatees, Big Cypress Fox Squirrels and Golden Mouse.
The final trip report is Jane Kempler’s trip to Lochaline, Scotland. She got some cool species like Atlantic Common Seal, Eurasian Otter, Pine Marten and Scottish Wildcat and the pictures are all stunning (my personal favourites are the Red Squirrel action shots and the cheeky Otter sticking out its tongue).
Maxime Briola has shared some photos of Chipmunks (Tamias) from Yosemite and Mariposa and would like some help identifying the species.
Matty Stouffer, travelling to China early next year, is looking for a guide in the centre/west of the country.
Finally, Alanna Marie, who has been volunteering at a South African reserve for a while, would love a scientist’s advice on the research proposal she has put together about Brown Hyenas (Strandwolf). So if you think you could help, have a look at this post.
