The Weekly Recap

Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap! The fact I find myself writing about mammalwatching today proves all the Friday the 13th superstitions are true. I have been cursed.

Starting off this week is Scott Vanderpoel’s report from East Africa: Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi. It has some great species like Chimpanzee, Golden Monkey and Olive Baboon as well as some gorgeous photos, especially those of Mountain Gorillas.

The next instalment of Marc Bozon’s Big Cat Year is here, with a trip to South Africa! Cat highlights were Leopard, African Wild Cat and Caracal but he also saw some other great species like Aardvark and Aardwolf. Check out the report for his stories and photos.

John Van Niel has shared a great report from Chitwan NP, Nepal with Nepal Dynamic Eco Tours where he saw 21 species including Crab-eating Mongoose, Asian One-horned Rhino and Tiger!

And the final trip report was Keith Millar’s from September in Australia, with 6 states, an impressive 88 species (Platypus, Dugong, Eastern Tube-nosed bat and Australian Snubfin Dolphin) and some very cute photos of fluffy Australian mammals.

A few new trips are up for joining this week. Latin Wild Tours are advertising two primate photography tours to Brazil, searching the Amazon for Emperor Tamarins, Bald Uakari and more. They are filmmakers (the guides, not the tamarins) and the photos look amazing – there are quite a few dates available for both so check out the post if you are interested. Royle Safaris are also advertising two more last minute trips: Ghana in March looking for Pangolins and Tree Hyraxes, and Vietnam in April looking for rare primates.

Some mammalwatchers are seeking travel advice. Levi Deen, travelling to Vosges, France would like to know where to see dormouse, bats and other species. Francesco Cuzzola would love recommendations for a mammal/hiking guide as a day trip from Las Vegas. And Ben Balmford, planning a trip to Japan this summer, would be very grateful if any Japan based mammalwatcher could help him book a lodge which is only contactable by phone call – see this post if you can help!

Ellen Linton is also asking for advice, but on which bat detector to buy.

And finally Olli Haukkovaara has posted about his new hobby – remote mammalwatching! Spending hours in mud crawling with ants is no more… Instead, you can connect to live webcams and just sit and watch until a mammal wanders past, from the comfort of your own home. I suppose it was only a matter of time until someone created an OnlyFans for mammalwatchers.
