New study on subspecies status of Wapiti/Elk on The Tibetan Plateau
In connection with research for a recent trip to The Tibetan Plateau, I came upon a new study on the subspecies classification of Wapiti/Elk, Cervus canadensis, in Qinghai and Gansu (China) published in 2025 that I thought might be relevant for mammal watchers travelling to these parts. The study analyzed DNA from 89 individuals from five geographic populations across eastern Qinghai and Gansu. They conclude that all these populations should be classified as one subspecies, Cervus canadensis kansuensis.
