The Weekly Recap
Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap!
The first report of the week was Haitong’s, from Hokkaido. It has lots of great photos of very cute Japanese mammals, some highlights of which are Ezo Flying Squirrel, American Mink and Harbor Seal.
Next is Hugh Lansdown’s report from Uganda with Harrier Tours: it features 41 mammal species, from East African Potto and Chimpanzee to Spotted Hyena and Banded Mongoose, and some stunning photos.
Jannico Kelk has posted a trip report from Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. It’s a great, detailed report of mainly bats, and some highlight species are Solomon’s Naked-backed Fruit Bat, Geoffroy’s Rousette and Solomon Island Flying Fox.
This report from Tanzania by Tim van der Meer is (yet another!) great one, with lots of information, 42 species like Zanzibar Dwarf Galago and Black-and-rufous Sengi, and some gorgeous primate portraits – not unlike my brother’s baby photos.
The next report is from a first-time poster, Daniel Durán. Welcome! From Mexico, it features many cool species like Agouti, Central American Woolly Opossum and Baird’s Tapir.
Next up is John Van Niel’s report of an Iberian Lynx focused trip to Spain. He was very successful with the lynx, of which he took amazing photos, but also with 11 other species like Iberian Mole, Egyptian Mongoose and Wild Boar.
William Henri Lewis’ trip to Panama last year is here – 35 species including Quichua Porcupine, Water Opossum and Panamanian Dwarf Squirrel, great photos and some proud sporting of the mammalwatching.com t-shirt!
He also shared another great report of a Western USA road trip last summer, through places like Arizona and New Mexico. He got 79 species in 3 weeks, like Northern Fur Seal, White-sided Jackrabbit, and Mojave Ground Squirrel.
And the last trip report for the week was Harriet Nimmo’s from the CAR, with a total of 17 mammal species including Western Lowland Gorilla, White and Black-bellied Pangolins and Giant Forest Squirrel.
My dad is looking (begging) for some social media help, mainly for making reels about specific trips or exciting discoveries. If this is something you’d be interested in, check out his post. Especially if you want any hope of my dad’s thumb not being in the corner of all future visual mammalwatching propaganda.
This post is inquiring about good mammalwatching spots in the Spanish Pyrenees, so leave a comment if you have any tips.
And finally, the rediscovery of the Lazarus species Pygmy Long-tailed Possum by a group of fan-favourite mammalwatchers (and also my dad) on a trip to West Papua in 2023 led by Carlos Bocos has been all over the news recently. But there’s been almost no mention of the mammalwatching community’s role in this exciting feat, so please read the post for the full story if you want to prevent my dad from spiralling further into triok-induced despair and show your gratitude that, at the very least, the birdwatchers cannot claim this one.
