When I was sitting at the river, I was contemplating just bringing my inflatable boat here next time, but it seem like a lot of hassle for how small the boatable area actually is. I saw rental kayaks, but I would never go into such thing (surely not alone and not with a non-waterproof camera). Boat trips on a motorboat with someone else driving it are really, really last resort for me – and the river otters have a large range, I simply have to run into one within a few decades 🙂 Marine Otter though, that’s an entirely different question, would you mind sharing the site?

Hi Jan, The beach town of Cachagua has a walkway along the ocean just north of the beach where they are seen frequently. The site is also good for dolphins. I posted a report on Chile and Argentina last February which has additional details if you are interested.

Ah, that’s too bad. Might be worth a follow-up visit if you are in the area – mornings are best apparently (as usual).

I was there at sunrise and walked up and down for a couple of hours. But I know well that animals are never guaranteed. I am in Santiago often, so there is a chance of stopping by sometime on the future. This has the advantage that it doesn’t even need a car.

Hi Jan,
Boat trips from Chepu don’t guarantee otter sightings, but we saw four otters in a couple of hours last February. They are inexpensive and excellent value. There is a dependable site for Marine Otter on the mainland, but it is quite far north of Chiloe. Cheers, Ian
