The Weekly Recap

Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap!

The first trip report this week is from Chris Townend’s trip to Emas NP and the Pantana, Brazill. He found 43 mammal species (including 13 bats!), with highlights like Puma, Lowland Tapir, Ocelot, Maned Wolf and a bunch of great photos.

Next is another report by Chris, this time from Alaska: despite it being mainly a birding trip, he redeemed himself with 24 mammal species including Canada Lynx, Orca and Dall’s Porpoise.

This report from Bhutan by Mike Hoit, who saw Western Red Panda, Golden Langurs, Hairy-footed and Bhutan Giant Flying Squirrels and more, gives some very useful notes on mammalwatching in the country.

Mark Hows’ trip to Kenya in February saw Giant Forest Hog, Maned Rat, Heart-nosed Bat, and a great picture of a Naked Mole Rat looking like it crawled over from another planet.

Finally, Frank Wierckx has posted a report of his Ladakh Christmas Snow Leopard trip last year. As well as the obvious target he saw Pallas’ Cat, Tibetan Sand Fox and some Wild Asses.

Check out this great article all about the story of conservation and “spectacular comeback” of the Iberian Lynx! It’s always nice to hear some good wildlife news for once.

This post shares a compilation of some recent Pulsar video footage of wolves, bears and lynx if you want to get an idea of how good a thermal scope it is!

If anyone has any suggestions for where to go on an eastern US road trip to see the species mentioned in this post (Red Wolf, Appalachian Cottontail, Allegheny Woodrat…), please comment!

The same goes for this post, where Stephen Kaye would like recommendations for a 2-3 week mammal trip in Central America – especially for a good tour guide or company. Also, someone else is looking for a guide to find Pallas’ Cat in Mongolia this August here

This post is asking how crowded Glacier NP and Yellowstone will be in July, and if anyone has any strategies for avoiding crowds.
