Hi Chris, looks like a great trip! I was in Gouli from 2nd – 9th March, so I missed you (& the snow leopards!) by one day unfortunately

Hi Chris – I got a message from distinguished primatologist Noel Rowe, who was interested in your report. “I read with interest Chris Daniels’ report about China. It would be very helpful if a Google Earth map was included. I could find Chendu and Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve but not Xiangride the town about 1h 15min north of the Gouli valley. Do you happen to know which of the 4 subspecies of Golden Snub Nose Monkeys you saw was? I assume there is a road to Tang Jia He. What kind of road is it? tarmac, gravel, Need a 4X4? It doesn’t show up on Google Earth or Maps.”

Thanks Jon, here is a bit more info for Noel:
      – I think that by range it’s the Moupin subspecies of Golden Snub Nosed Monkey (ie Rhinopithecus roxellana roxellana)
      – Tangjiahe has a good paved road through the park that we used for spotlighting. No 4wd needed at all, it’s quite developed. It’s not common to see the golden snub nosed monkey, but with some walking it’s not unheard of either. My guide said it was one of the best views he’s ever had (outside of the preserves for them).
      – Indeed, Google maps struggles severely in China. I found Gaia to be more accurate with location names. Xiangride is here: 35.99198, 97.88663.
