Trip Report – Borneo’s Rare Mammals Tour – Royle Safaris – August/September 2023

Every year Royle Safaris runs a small group tour to Sabah and in August / September 2023 our latest mammalwatching trip to Borneo was conducted. We visited Tabin Wildlife Reserve, Kinabatangan River, Deramakot Forest Reserve and Sepilok and also had a post tour extension to Tawau Hills National Park. The trip was once again expertly guided by Mike Gordon and we had a great success of seeing 49 species of mammals, including Sunda leopard cat, Borneo orangutan, proboscis monkey, binturong and other commonly seen species as well as rarer mammals such as great treeshrew, Sabah grizzled langur, moonrat among other species.

Non mammal highlights included a huge 5m plus reticulated python and a surprise great argus pheasant in Deramakot and Tabin respectively.

Royle Safaris runs several trips to Malaysian Borneo annually and whilst most of these are tailored private tours we do have our standard small group tour running each year. Our 2024 group tour is now full, but we have started taking bookings on our 2025 trip for anyone interested please get in touch (info@royle-safaris.co.uk) for more info.
