The Weekly Recap
Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap!
Our first trip report this week is by Janco van Gelderen’s from a 1StopBorneo trip to Sabah. With 52 pages of beautiful photos it is definitely worth taking a look at — species highlights include Sunda Pangolin, Moonrat, Bornean Orangutan and a Bay Cat! There were way too many great photos to choose from for the cover so I wanted to include an extra one here, purely because I find it very amusing. And perhaps also because it uncannily resembles my father indoor skydiving…

Next was a report by “wildlife_watcher” from 5 days in Southern Arizona, where they saw some cool mammals like a Bobcat, Javalina, and Jackrabbit.
Stuart Chapman’s search for the Yangtze Finless Porpoise in Nanjing, China was successful, and his post has some good tips for anyone else hoping to make the trip!
And if you’ve been following along like I have, you’ll be excited to know that Marc Bozon has shared the next episode of his Big Cat Year! A trip to The Netherlands and Belgium successfully produced a European Wildcat – and some more species such as Raccoons and Roe Deer.
Venkat’s 10 days in Baja California Sur last summer got him 36 mammals with highlights like Black Jackrabbit, Insular Kangaroo Rat and Fishing Myotis. The report is also very informative (including coordinates for mammal locations), so definitely give it a read.
My dad’s report from a few recent Krachan national parks (Thailand) contains some great species like the beautiful Large-spotted Civet, Kitti’s Hog-nosed Bat, Thailand Horseshoe Bat, Sun Bear, and a very fluffy Lar Gibbon.
Some trips to Jaguarland, Bolivia next summer are looking for participants. They are both being run by Nick’s Adventures Bolivia: the first, posted here, will be end of July. The second, happening in August, has been shared by Enrico Macchiavello, a solo traveller. Species targets for both include Jaguar, Jaguarundi, Giant Anteater and more… so if you have no plans for summer 2027, check out the posts!
There have been a couple of updates to Mammalia’s 2027 trips, led by Carlos Bocos. The July West Papua trip and the Sulawesi expedition have unfortunately both been postponed until 2028, but fear not! There will still be a trip to West Papua in February, and one to Papua New Guinea in May which still has 2 spots empty…
Frighteningly a month has already passed since I last said this, as another episode of the Mammalwatching Podcast is out! This time it is an interview with Martin Schaefer, Jaime Palacios Perez and John Rogers, all from Fundación Jocotoco where they are doing ground-breaking conservation work in Ecuador.
And lastly, as always there are a couple of questions for the mammalwatching community.
Jackson Frost would like some tips for a short trip to Kenya in January: what he knows for sure is that he’d like to spend time in Nairobi NP, and to target Giant Forest Hog, but any other recommendations would be appreciated.
And Shaun, visiting Sichuan in December, is wondering is anyone knows whether Wawu Shan or Labahe are best for Red Pandas.

P.S: if you’re reading this on November 5th then it was my dad’s birthday yesterday… so feel free to do your worst.
