Planning Your Trip

If you’re planning your first mammal-watching adventure in Vietnam, start by visiting our Vietnam Mammal-Watching Tours page at https://nextcontinenttours.com/vietnam-mammal-tours/. There, you’ll find an introduction to mammal watching in Vietnam, details about our tours, and guidance on designing your own custom itinerary.

For those with specific target species in mind, we can create a tailored itinerary designed around your goals, budget, and timing.

We offer Vietnam’s largest and most diverse range of mammal-focused tours, covering not only primates and large iconic species, but also highly specialised endemics and families including civets, bats, rodents, muntjacs, pangolins, cetaceans, and more.

For primates, we currently target around 85% of Vietnam’s species. This includes all three doucs, four species of gibbon, three species of slow loris, five species of macaque, and several specialist langurs. If primates are your main interest, explore our Vietnam Primate-Watching Tours page at https://nextcontinenttours.com/vietnam-primate-watching-tours/ — home to the most extensive range of primate-focused experiences currently available in Vietnam.

Beyond primates, some of our most sought-after targets include six species of civet (major highlights such as Owston’s Civet and Masked Palm Civet), as well as Mainland Leopard Cat, Small-toothed Ferret Badger, Burmese Hare, Sunda Pangolin, Asian Elephant, Gaur, Particoloured Flying Squirrel, Brush-tailed Porcupine, Greater Bandicoot Rat, Black Giant Squirrel and Irrawaddy Dolphin. Other major rarities including Large-antlered Muntjac and Annamite Muntjac.

We also have a big focus on bat-watching, regularly encountering highly sought-after Ratanaworabhan’s Fruit Bat, Large Flying Fox, Leschenault’s Rousette, Ha Long Leaf-nosed Bat, Black-bearded Tomb Bat, Woolly Horseshoe Bat, and over a dozen additional species at cave & roost sites.

East Java

Heru Firtyadi is a well known bird guide working in East Java and Bali, and is now guiding mammalwatching tours as well. Based in Baluran National Park, Heru is able to guide trips across Java though he works mainly in East Java and Bali. He can reliably find species including Javan Warty Pig, Javan Chevrotain, Javan Slow Loris, East Javan Langur and Banteng. With a little luck you might also see Javan Leopard, Dhole and Sunda Pangolin.
