The Weekly Recap

Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap!

This week has been a very busy one on the website. To start us off is Romain Boquier’s short report from a trip to Uzbekistan, where he saw 6 species including Bactrian Deer and Yellow and Long-clawed Ground Squirrels. He even gives the GPS coordinates for each species so this is a very useful report if you are looking for any of them.

Next is Ralf Bürglin’s great post entitled “Sun bear vs ‘urinal men”’ – if that doesn’t make you want to read it, then I don’t know what will. A report of his experiences camping trip in Kaeng Krachan NP, Thailand, it features tales of Leopards snatching Spectacled Langurs from under tourists’ noses and tents being sewn back up with a smile after a Sun Bear’s attempted break-in. It’s safe to say it’s a very exciting read. And as for the reason behind the title… I’ll let you find out.

And Ralf has also shared a more general report from a recent trip to Thailand with his wife. They saw a ton of great species like Asian Elephant, Asian Palm Civet, Pileated Gibbon and Smooth-coated Otter and even bat bedbugs, which sound like something my father would’ve invented to threaten me with for misbehaving as a child (or to force me out of bed at 4am to check mammal traps…).

Next up is a report by Ian Thompson from Spain. It includes Greater Horseshoe Bats, Algerian Mouse, Eurasian Otter and 18 other species!

This report, from a tour of Argentina and Chile led by Nick Buys and built around Puma and Orca, features not only these two species but also Large Hairy Armadillo, Culpeo Fox and Molina’s Hog-nosed Skunk, among others.

There were two new reports from India.

The first is by Mark Bozon, currently doing a Big Cat Year. He saw 60 mammals including many cool wild cat species like Bengal Tiger, Jungle Cat and Rusty-spotted Cat, so a very successful installment to his big year!

The second is from Thomas Maunders, and he saw some great species like Ruddy Mongoose, Jungle Cat and even an amazing standoff between a Leopard and a Tigress over a freshly killed Bengal Langur.

Next we have a report by John Wright from Senegal, somewhere not so often featured on this website! But with 33 species in 11 days, such as Manatee, Red-flanked Duiker and Pale Fox, I think it’s safe to say this is a great mammalwatching location.

Ashton Reiser shared a great report from 11 Antarctic Peninsula expeditions over the past season. With 18 marine mammal species, there are some amazing photos, like a Peale’s Dolphin Bow riding and an adorable Hourglass Dolphin calf.

And the final trip report was from Sichao Ma’s 10 days in Sri Lanka this past February. With two Thick-tailed Pangolins, a Sri Lanka Sloth Bear and 3 species of cat, it was a great trip.

A great new episode of the Mammalwatching Podcast is out! It is an interview with Joel Sartore, the man behind Nat Geo’s Photo Ark project which aims to photograph all kinds of species, big or small, bringing equal attention and care to them. Check out some of his 17,000 species photographed here – they are incredible!

And lastly, Vsevolod Rudyi would like some advice on the best places for bat roosts in Europe, so comment any recommendations.
