The Weekly Recap
Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap!
Starting off this week is Bryan Kao’s report from a trip to California. With gorgeous photos, some highlights are Northern Elephant Seal, Fin Whale, Eastern Pacific Long-beaked Common Dolphin and even a California Two-spot Octopus!
Next is this short report of Jan Ebr’s search for a Siberian Flying Squirrel in Nuuksio, Finland. After finding nothing but a few droppings, he is beginning to agree with the Google searches questioning whether it even exists. But he did manage to get 4 other species, including a Mountain Hare and a Bank Vole.
Seva Rudyi has shared the sequel to Alex Meyer’s 2025 NUTTER winning “Amazing Azores” report – surprisingly titled “Amazing Azores: the sequel” (or “In the wake of the Giants”, which I love). Like all reports from the area it is packed full of cetaceans and beautiful photos, with highlights like Blue Whale, Sei Whale and of course the Azores Noctule bat.
This report from Colombia by Tomer Ben-Yehuda is amazing, with 67 mammal species, 54 of which were lifers! Giant Anteater, Amazon Pink River Dolphin, Napo Spiny Rat and Spectacled Bear are just a few of many highlights.
And the last trip report this week was Jorick van de Water’s from Thailand. It was another impressive trip, with 32 species including Bengal Slow Loris, Indochinese Ground Squirrel, Exotic Roundleaf Bat and more great photos.
Carlos Bocos will be guiding a trip to West Papua in August, and one to Sulawesi in October. My dad always speaks very highly of him, so I’m sure these trips are not to miss if you’ve been wanting to explore the area. See more details here!
Royle Safaris also have a few places left on a trip next May searching for African Golden Cats in Kibale NP, Uganda.
Last but not least, part 3 of Coke Smith’s case study of Thailand’s natural history is here, this time of the Western Forest Complex. Just like parts 1 and 2 it is an amazing compilation and definitely worth looking at if you’re going to the area (or just if you are interested!).

P.S: Because – as we all know by now – the only thing I love more than embarrassing my father is attempting to get him banished from mammalwatching, here is a photo which he foolishly sent me of his own accord.

Yes that is a bird in his hand. You may now cancel him. Please
