The Weekly Recap
Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap! It has not been so weekly recently as I have been on a Baltics trip with my dad and brother. By some miracle we didn’t do any mammalwatching (except a Saimaa Ringed Seal which I managed to escape) and we did do a lot of father-mocking so I was mostly pleased. To start catching up, this recap will be of all posts up until July 3rd and in a few days there will be another, so don’t panic if yours isn’t here yet 🙂
The first trip report of this recap is my dad’s, from the epic Brazil trip he took back in June with a gang of familiar mammalwatching faces. They saw 5 endemic Porcupines, many endemic primates including Blond Capuchin and Blond Titi, the Brazilian Three-banded Armadillo, Northern Maned Sloth and much much more. It also sounded like a lot of fun even despite the mammals, thanks to the matching hats and t-shirts and some praying to the mammal gods.
Part 2 of this trip is my dad’s report from his weekend in Brasilia looking for Hoary Foxes (spoiler alert: he got them). This was followed by a few days in Panama where he saw lots of bats like Armién’s Myotis, a beautiful Clouded Oncilla and Cacomistles.
Ficus Tours have shared a roundup of their trips to India so far this year: Western Ghats, Gujarat and Assam with species like Brown Mongoose, Nilgiri Tahr and Jungle Cat.
Next up is Tom Terleph’s trip to Southern Thailand where he found plenty of bats including Kunz’s Leaf-nosed Bat and Black-bearded Tomb Bat as well as an Indomalayan Long-tailed Giant Rat.
Daan Dekeukeleire’s report from Georgia features 19 mammal species with highlights like Marbled Polecat, East Caucasian Tur and Lesser Mouse-eared Bat.
This report of Mac Hunter’s trip from Kaziranga NP, India to Bhutan has some great species like One-horned Rhinos, Tigers, Smooth-coated Otter, Bhutan Giant Squirrel and Sikkim Pika.
The Borneo section of Marc Bozon’s ongoing Big Cat Year is here, with amazing sightings of Borneo Bay Cat, Sunda Leopard Cat, Marbled Cat, Sunda Pangolin and 52 other species.
And the final trip report is Ian Thompson’s from Malaysia and Thailand. With 61 great species, he saw things like Sunda Pangolin, Indochinese Flying Squirrel, and Sun Bear.
Royle Safaris will be headed to Bolivia in October of next year, with target species including Jaguar, Jaguarundi, Puma and Ocelot — check out the post if you’re interested in joining.
Last month’s episode of the Mammalwatching Podcast was all about Charles and my dad’s recent trips to China. They told some good stories and saw some great species, so definitely give it a listen!
Steve Babbs is looking for some reliable places to find Giant Anteaters in Villavicencio, Colombia. He is also wondering about Ornate Titi Monkey near Cumeral, so leave a comment if you know about either of these species or have any general advice for Colombia.
He’s also wondering if anyone knows which hotels in Zanzibar the Zanzibar Galago sometimes visits.
Like all mammalwatchers, David would love to see Snow Leopards. He is wondering whether India or China would be the best location. If he chooses China he would like to combine his trip with seeing Giant Pandas, and so any guide recommendations would be appreciated!
Adrian, who will be going back to Mongolia this summer (and may even be there now!) is asking for the best places to photograph big cats.
And finally, someone travelling to Borneo is looking for guides of “equal quality” to the legendary Mike Gordon. Their main targets are elephants and cats, but would also like to see birds. Let them know if you have any recommendations!
