A Northern Pygmy Slow Loris (Xanthonycticebus intermedius), Guangxi, China, May 2026
Little is known about this nocturnal primate, other than a great deal of the forest it inhabits has been destroyed. It was wonderful to see five of these in a couple of hours at a tiny village in China close to the Vietnam border. Chinese Giant Flying Squirrel (Petaurista xanthotis), near Xining, April 2026
This is a spectacular large flying squirrel. Frighteningly large in fact when one glides so low over your head that you have to duck!
There seem to be very few photographs of this species though we found two in an hour at a site just 90 minutes from Xining Airport.
More details of this and 16 other species seen in just 5 days are in my new trip report at https://www.mammalwatching.com/community-post/qinghais-gouli-valley-qilian-mountains-and-xining-china2026/

A Chinese mountain cat (Felis bieti), on the hunt for rodents. Qinghai/Ganshu, April 2026.
This cat, endemic to the Tibetan Plateau, lives at high elevations and like apline meadow habitat. A threatened species, it was first photographed in the wild in 2007. I failed to find this cat in 2024, so was delighted to have this close encounter this week in what seems to be a reliable area to find them not far from Xining in the stunningly beautiful Qilian Mountains. Thank you @alvinwu1996 ! The trip report will be out soon. Sign up for the weekly newsletter from mammalwatching.com if you want to read it. https://www.mammalwatching.com/subscribe-to-updates/

A Bengal Slow Loris (Nycticebus bengalensis) wanders along a power line on the border between China and Myanmar, Yunnan, April 2026
These endangered nocturnal primates, victims of the pet trade, are famed for being one of the world’s few venomous mammals. A bite from a loris can prove fatal to humans -though not Lady Gaga, who was bitten by a loris during a music video shoot in 2014. She thought it was “cute” but couldn’t read the loris’s poker face. Boom. #mammalwatching #slowloris #ladygaga #primatesofinstagram #chinawildlife

An endangered Skywalker Hoolock Gibbon (Hoolock tianxing) starts his day in China’s Yunnan Province, April 2026.
I’d thought these apes were very difficult to observe in the wild, but it turns out they are easy to see near a village quite close to Mangshi City. Read the trip report on mammalwatching.com #mammalwatching #chinanature #primatesofinstagram

Wang Wenyong, a ranger in Tangjiahe Nature Reserve in Sichuan, gave me this extraordinary iPhone footage of Yellow-throated Martens catching a Reeve’s Muntjac in the reserve. Martens know no fear. They even fatally injured a Giant Panda here in 2014. #mustelids #mammalwatching

Yesterday was my last day working for the United Nations. I’ve not yet figured out what comes next beyond a still vague plan of becoming a professional mammalwatcher. But here, at least, are the next 8 months. Whether or not I’m feeling so enthusiastic about my career choices (and travel) come December remains to be seen . #mammalwatching
