Java and Bali

Javan Warty Pig (Sus verrucosus), Baluran National Park 2025

I visited Indonesia for the first time in June 2010: after a meeting in Jakarta I had a few free days to look around West Java before leaving for New Caledonia. I returned briefly to Jakarta in 2023 and went in search of bats with Carlos Bocos. And in  2025 I spent two days in East Java.

East Java

Sunda Pangolin (Manis javanica) near Baluran National Park, 2025

Alas Purwo National Park

East Javan Langur (Trachypithecus auratus)

An afternoon here in 2025 produced East Javan Langur, Long-tailed Macaque, Black Giant Squirrel, Banteng, Rusa and Wild Boar plus my target Javan Chevrotain at dusk.

Baluran National Park

Javan Warty Pig (Sus verrucosus)

During an afternoon in Baluran in 2025 we saw reintroduced Javan Warty Pigs, Lesser False Vampire Bats, East Javan Langur, Long-tailed Macaque, Plantain Squirrel and a feral Water Buffalo. That evening, close to the park, I saw several Lesser Bandicoot Rats (probably) and a superb encounter with my first Sunda Pangolin.

West Java

Javan Small-toothed Palm Civet, Arctogalidia trivirgata trilineata, Halimun Nationa Park, 2010

Gunung Gede National Park

Gunung Gede / Gede Mountain

In 2010 I saw Ebony (or West Javan) and Grizzled Langurs, Wild Boar, Javan Ferret Badger, Javan Mongoose, Horsfield’s Tree Shrew, Black Giant Squirrels, Sunda Black-banded (Black-striped) Squirrels and Three-striped Ground Squirrels.

West Javan Langur, Trachypithecus mauritius

There were Medium Bentwing Bats in a cave, Lesser Gymnure, Polynesian Rat, a Niviventer species, Common Palm Civet and an (introduced) Small Indian Civet

Halimun National Park

Silvery (Javan) Gibbon, Hylobates moloch

A night here in 2010 produced Javan Gibbons, Black-banded Squirrels, a Black Giant Squirrel and my first Black-eared Pygmy Squirrel. After dark we had Common Palm Civet and Javan Small Toothed Palm Civet (my photos of which accidentally helped to rediscover the species).

We also saw a Malay (Stink) Badger, Red Giant Flying Squirrels, Pencil Tailed Tree Mouse and Javan Sunda Spiny Rats.

Jakarta

Javan Slit-faced Bat (Nycteris javanica), Bogor

In June 2023 I spent a night in Jakarta on my way home for a trip to West Papua. With Carlos Bocos’s help we saw a colony of Javan Slit-faced Bats at Bogor and, in the middle of Jakarta, we saw Short-nosed Fruit Bats, a  Lesser Large-footed Myotis and Black Rats. I returned in 2025 and visited the Kawasan Arboretum Mangrove Walk, in the middle of the city, to look for the Greater Long-tongued Blossom Bats that I had missed in 2023. We saw blossom bats but were unable to photograph them to fully confirm they were indeed greater not lesser.
